Shang Huiliang, China Renewable Resources Industry Technology Innovation Strategic Alliance: It is expected that my country’s main recycled non-ferrous metal output will exceed 17 million tons this year

Shang Huiliang, vice chairman and secretary-general of the China Renewable Resources Industry Technology Innovation Strategic Alliance, said at the 2023 Fubao Information Nonferrous Metals Industry Annual Conference that my country’s main recycled nonferrous metal output is expected to exceed 17 million tons in 2023, a year-on-year increase of 6% above.

Shang Huiliang predicts that my country’s recycled non-ferrous metal output will reach more than 20 million tons in 2025. By the end of the “14th Five-Year Plan”, the proportion of recycled non-ferrous metal supply will reach more than 24%.

“During the ’14th Five-Year Plan’ period, my country’s recycled non-ferrous metal industry will develop towards green, circular, collaborative, high-value, specialization and clustering.” Shang Huiliang said.

Shang Huiliang said that the recycled non-ferrous metal industry can support the realization of the “dual carbon” goal of the non-ferrous metal industry, especially the contribution of recycled aluminum to carbon dioxide emission reduction. Compared with primary aluminum, recycled aluminum has obvious advantages in energy consumption and environmental protection. The total energy consumption of recycled aluminum is only 4.86% of the energy consumption of primary aluminum production. Recycled aluminum production does not produce fluorine pollution, and the carbon dioxide emissions are 4.6% of the emissions from primary aluminum production, and the global warming potential (GWP) is only 1/24 of primary aluminum.

Shang Huiliang believes that by 2025, the output of recycled copper and aluminum will reach 4 million tons and 11.5 million tons respectively. Non-ferrous metals such as copper and lead also have good recycling properties, and their energy consumption is much lower than mineral raw materials, contributing to carbon emission reduction in the non-ferrous metal industry.
